Fast Input/Output and Competitive Programming Templates
A good contest template removes repeated setup without hiding the problem’s logic. Fast standard-stream settings can reduce input/output overhead, but they cannot rescue an algorithm with the wrong growth rate. We finish Fundamentals with a short C++17 program handling several independent test cases, local per-case state and clean output. Treat templates as understood tools, not collections of unexplained macros.
Prerequisites: All earlier Fundamentals lessons; especially functions, loops, types and complexity.
Build the idea
1. Configure streams before I/O
ios::sync_with_stdio(false) permits C++ standard streams to operate independently of C stdio synchronization. cin.tie(nullptr) removes the automatic flush of a tied output stream before each input operation. Set them before reading or writing. Once unsynchronized, avoid casually mixing cin/cout with scanf/printf because their buffering order is no longer coordinated in the usual way.
2. Separate one case from the driver
main reads the test count and each case length; solveCase reads that case’s values and returns its sum. The accumulator is local and starts at zero each call. This prevents one case’s total from carrying into the next. More complex solutions must reset visited arrays, containers and other case-dependent state too. Global constants can remain shared, but mutable global state needs a deliberate lifecycle.
3. Keep output contractual
Use \n when a newline is needed; std::endl also flushes, which can be wasteful in large ordinary output loops. Interactive tasks are different: the judge may wait for a flushed query, so explicitly flush when required. This curriculum’s default is batch input, where printing prompts or debug logs to standard output corrupts answers.
4. Test multiple cases together
For cases [1,2,3], [−5,5], and an empty sequence, outputs must be 6,0,0 on separate lines. The empty final case is especially good for detecting stale totals. Test smallest sizes, all-equal values, negative values where allowed and maximum magnitudes. Compare against a simple brute-force/reference version on small random data when the main solution becomes sophisticated.
5. Debug the actual failure class
Compile in C++17 mode with warnings, read the earliest useful diagnostic, and rebuild after edits. Runtime bounds mistakes need index/lifetime inspection; Wrong Answer needs a counterexample and a violated invariant; TLE needs operation analysis as well as profiling if available. Do not paste unsafe macros redefining int globally or assume every local convenience belongs in every solution. Include only needed headers and keep types explicit.
C++17 implementation
This is a complete program. Compile with C++17 and enter the input described below.
#include<iostream>
long long solveCase(int n){
long long sum=0;
for(int i=0;i<n;++i){
long long x;
std::cin>>x;
sum+=x;
}
return sum; // Case state is local: nothing leaks to the next case.
}
int main(){
std::ios::sync_with_stdio(false);
std::cin.tie(nullptr);
int tests;
if(!(std::cin>>tests)){
return 0;
}
while(tests--){
int n;
std::cin>>n;
std::cout<<solveCase(n)<<'\n';
}
return 0;
}
Complexity analysis
O(T+Σn) time across T cases and O(1) auxiliary space; values are streamed. The I/O settings change constants, not the asymptotic bound. With each n≤200000, total input count≤10^6 and |value|≤10^9, case sums fit long long.
Example input and output
Read T (0..100000). Each case contains n (0..200000), then n integers |value|≤10^9; total n≤10^6. Print one sum per case.
Input
3 3 1 2 3 2 -5 5 0
Output
6 0 0
Each call begins with sum=0. The third case is empty and correctly outputs zero instead of a previous result.
Practical applications
Use this as a minimal batch-problem shell and replace solveCase with the actual algorithm. Add containers and helpers only when needed. Combine the completed Fundamentals techniques with the Graph Algorithms, Data Structures and other folders, keeping preprocessing, query costs and edge cases explicit.
